On the 4th of July we celebrate our nation's birth. Most Americans mark the day with picnics, cookouts, ballgames and days at the beach. The Cato Institute would like to encourage people everywhere to also remember and appreciate the principles of government that are set forth in America's founding documents, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America.
Steadily rising gas prices have kept some drivers off the road this year. CNN reports that 31% of Americans have canceled or shortened their planned holiday weekend vacation because of rising gas prices. As the summer driving season heats up, Cato scholars offer their perspectives on the recent rise in energy prices.
The Supreme Court on June 26 affirmed the lower court's ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, which means D.C.'s 32-year-old ban on firearms is unconstitutional. Plaintiff's co-counsel and Cato scholar Robert A. Levy comments, "Heller is merely the opening salvo in a series of litigations that will ultimately resolve what weapons and persons can be regulated and what restrictions are permissible. But because of Thursday's decision, the prospects for reviving the original meaning of the Second Amendment are now substantially brighter."
